Yesterday, my husband was involved in a pace line accident. apparently as some of you know a rider attempted a turn , and did not announce it with sufficient timing for other riders. Rider one went down, and my husband did not have time to avoid the rider, he ran over the rider , was thrown from his bike, cracking his helmet.
I took him to the E.D, and he has a separated right shoulder with a bone fracture, 2 broken ribs, and road rash, everywhere.
My husband and I have been riding for years, and consider it such a blessing to have such an active biking community to learn from, and are thankful for this bike club.
I think this bike club and officers are under appreciated for the work that goes into trying to push this sport of biking that we all love.
I just have one thing to say to pace line riders. When you chose to ride with a group, whether you are in the front or back, please remember that you are responsible for "everyone" in the line. What you do can have a serious impact on one or many. So avail yourself of this great website, read wheelspeak, ask questions, and constantly want to learn how to be a safe rider. It doesn't end when you get on the bike, its just the beginning.
Finally, thanks to everyone who has called Tony. Both he and I appreciate it very much.

I ride with Tony several times/week and sincerely feel for him. I called him today to wish him well and will stay in contact with him.
Paceline incidents such as this are usually avoidable, that is what's so sad. I saw one last year where 8 cyclists went down, 5 of them had to be transported. It was largely attributed to communication failure after a rider up front had a flat.

Communication is imperative in a paceline, however it's agreed upon to be done.

Kim:

Thank you for the report on Tony and we are all thankful that his injuries were not more severe. Crashes on our rides are infrequent but they do happen sometimes. While we aren't in a position to say whether Tony's incident was a matter of reckless riding or a mistake on the part of a rider, it is bringing the issue of ride safety and pace line riding into laser focus for the Board.

I think I can speak for the Board when I say that safety and responsibility when riding are key issues that we are trying to address. To that end, we have begun discussions on how to improve ride safety. While we are in the formulation stages at this point, I will be leading the effort as Ride Director to develop strategies to educate and inform our riders about the critical aspects of group and pace line riding. More information will be forthcoming on this matter.

We wish Tony a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him on rides again soon.

Hi my names John Foster and I was the rider that Tony unfortunately went over during the club ride on April 18th. I am glad to hear he is doing OK considering the injuries he sustained from his fall, I certainly wish him well and look forward to seeing him in the future.
Regarding the incident, I have to say that this was an avoidable accident. A rider made a decision to turn through the pace line with no time for me to avoid a collision. As you know I went down and Tony who was behind me could only ride over me and crash. I sustained a fractured wrist and a few two many road rashes.
I am sorry for the delay in writing but I could not obtain Tony's email address and I am now out of the country.

I hope in the future riders do remember they are responsible for their actions so please ride safely and think first before making any hasty moves. This was my first ride with the club but not my last.

Regards

John Foster
