Hi.
I'm going to be moving down to the St Johns County area in a couple months. I will be working near Greenbriar rd. in Switzerland/St. Johns area I believe. I currently live in Georgia and I am an avid mountain biker and road cyclist. I was hoping I could get some feedback regarding cycling in the Jacksonville area. All I know is that Jacksonville was listed in Bicycling magazine as one of the worst places to ride. :-( yikes! I hope thats not true! Please say it isn't so!!! :-)
I will be down next week to look at houses and I definitely want to try to live in a more bike friendly area (if there is one). I am not familiar with the areas, roads, etc.... Do you have bike lanes? Of course I'm use to walking out my door here and riding miles and miles of country roads. Obviously it wont be the same but if anyone has any insight or info about the general area for cycling, places to live, etc... I would greatly appreciate it. Also will need to locate a good bike shop. :-)
Looking forward to joining group rides in the area once I get settled.

Thanks,

Melissa

Melissa:

Indeed, the Jacksonville area has it's challenges for road bicyclists. But, we have a very strong club with approximately 600 members. We offer rides daily and we are focusing on improving bicycling in the area.

As far as the area you will be working in, I know it well, as I live in Switzerland. This is one of the better areas for riding as we have a lot of new roads with bicycle lanes and relatively low traffic (for the moment). There is a weekly Saturday ride called the Tour de Durbin Crossing that rides these roads and has a good turnout.

We would very much like to have you join us on rides. Look on the left of our web page and click RIDES - AREA RIDES or CLUB RIDES for our options. Feel free to contact me if you need more information

Also, lots of good bike shops. Within 5-10 miles of Switzerland there is Open Road on CR 210 and Champion Cyclery in Mandarin. Further from Switzerland, there is also Bicycles Etc., City Cycles, About Bikes, Lakeshore, Bike Fitters. Not sure which to recommend...perhaps best to start with the one that carries your brand of bike.

Jacksonville may have been listed in Bicycling magazine as one of the worst places to ride but that probably pertains more to bicycle commuters . Cycling in the ciy part of Jacksonville is not too bad once you know which roads to avoid. However, you will be in St John's County. That is completely different. One advantage of the economic crisis is that many wide smooth roads were built down there but the houses have not yet been built. So there is almost no traffic. I live 50 miles north of St John's county, nevertheless, I often drive down there to join the North Florida Bicycle Club rides starting from Durbin Crossing and the World Golf Village.

Most of the bike shops were mentioned , although there is also a TREK store just north of Switzerland at 9965 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville.
