.... anyone here that shaves your legs use an electric shaver? (i.e. Norelco, or Panasonic foil shaver) I was going to look into something easier than the old razor blade way, and thought the electric way would be quicker, and actually more smooth...

I don't see the point of doing a lot of the crazy stuff the professionals do unless I'm also making money at cycling, which I'm not, other than saving gas money.

I am posting with a bunch of guys here, right?

Yes, you're posting with guys. I use hair clippers with no guard and then go back with a nice Gillette. Silky!

We do it for fun. Besides our legs look sexy to our wives (or girlfriends).

Cycling isn't the only sport to have shaved legs.

Swimmers, Bodybuilders, Wrestlers, Tri-athletes--to name a few--all shave their legs, and a lot more hair in other places off their bodies.

This is quoted from the FAT CYCLIST'S BLOG (http://www.fatcyclist.com)

************************************************************

OK, So Why Do Cyclists Shave Their Legs, Then?
Well, there are several reasons most cyclists will give you. They will say that it makes them more aerodynamic, which would be a good reason...if it were true.

They will say they do it because it makes it easier to clean road rash out of their legs. To which I answer, if you're so confident you're going to be crashing, maybe you need to look into a different sport. Like chess, for example.

They will say they shave their legs because of tradition. This reason actually does have merit, but it's tantamount to proclaiming that you're a lemming.

There are two -- and only two -- real reasons cyclists shave their legs:
1. Vanity: You've worked hard to get the legs you've got. Why hide them under a mat of hair?
2. To impress other cyclists: Once you're on the bike, there's not much you can do to hide whether you're the alpha rider or a domestique. But at least while you're hanging out at the bike shop, shaved legs say, "I've joined the club; I'm a serious cyclist. I am so confident of my manliness that I can wear a bright jersey, tight lycra shorts, and have shaved legs without feeling ridiculous in public."
You see, when you shave, the hair that hides your muscle definition is gone, making it easier for you to admire those quads in the mirror, and for other cyclists to admire your calves on the bike. And since you've worked so hard to get those muscles, you feel it's your right to show them off in all their glory.

Here's something right out of Road Bike Rider newsletter:

Shaving Legs

What's the matter? You're smart enough to know that guys don't need to shave their legs to be good riders. But many good riders do shave, and you're thinking about doing it for the new season. Among your questions are the true benefits of shaving and the best way to go about it.

Here's help: There are numerous reasons for de-hairing legs, including aerodynamics, cooler air flow, impressive muscle definition, ease of massage, less skin abrasion in a crash, and ease of cleaning and bandaging wounds that do occur.

The last 2 reasons are the most valid and that's why riders will keep their gams gleaming through the winter, too. Others who routinely shave from spring through fall stop in the off season. They enjoy shelving the onerous chore for a few months. But easier road-rash treatment is still valid in the winter. You might want to enjoy some massages too.

By the way, leg warmers stay up better with shaved legs. The elastic gripper around the top clings to bare skin, but it slides down when there is leg hair. This is another reason some roadies shave year round.

If you haven't shaved before, here are 2 tips:

---Use clippers to remove as much hair as possible. Then tackle the stubble with shaving cream and a razor. If you use a razor for the initial denuding, it'll clog every half inch and take forever. After that, a once-per-week shave (with a regular or electric razor) should be all it takes.

---Don't shave for the first time on the eve of an important event. The weird sensation of sheets touching bare skin has been known to cause unsettled sleep. To avoid this problem, do an initial shave about 3 days before the event.

How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?
