Hi
I am planning a self-contained ride down the east coast in January 2010. I hope to start my ride in Jacksonville and end in Key West, taking a casual pace. I hope to use A1A and the East Coast Greenway when available. Would you recommend this route? If you have ridden this ride I would appreciate any advice to make this a safe and enjoyable trip.

I did this trip last December and it was a really nice ride. I would suggest that you get the Bicycle Touring Map from Adventure Cycling Association - Altantic Coast Section 7 shows St Aug to Key West. Their route keeps you on A1A as much as possible and I think they did a pretty good job. Some of the routes are a little complex in certain sections, but they're trying to keep you on good biking roads, so it is worth studying a bit beforehand and staying on their route (I got lost in Ft Lauderdale and Miami, when I tried to wing it a couple times).

Of course you need to start this ride on Amelia Island at Fort Clinch. Not way down south in Jacksonville. The ferry crossing the St John's River is great for cyclists.

Thanks for the input. I would like to ride Amelia Is. but my couchsurfing.org host that will help me with my vehicle is in Jax. Between them and warmshowers.org hosts, I have 'friends' all the way to Miami. Even the park rangers have been kind enough to help me with camping, even when full!
