The new year for the Century-A-Month Club has just started. It would be helpful if riders would use this forum to post planned century rides for the upcoming months. So please post local century rides organized by the club, organized by other local groups and ones you plan on your own. Thanks, |

Many centuries are posted on our Events Page here: http://nfbc.us/Rides/Events/tabid/58/Default.aspx As Ride Director I have been able to include at least one century route every month also. I would guess future Ride Directors will have no problems doing likewise. If anyone knows of centuries not otherwise covered please post here, as Jonathan requested. I'd like to hear from Paul Calewarts, Will Farrel, Jeanne Hargrave, Patrick, etc. |

| The website's Events Page now shows a Florida Bicycle Touring Calendar which is statewide: http://www.nfbc.us/Rides/Events/tabid/58/Default.aspx Admins still have the ability to add "Other Noteworthy Events" at the bottom. I can't imagine much being posted here that's not already shown, making this thread redundant... unless I misunderstood Jonathan's purpose. *unsure* |

Larry, I believe Jonathan's effort was to "cut through the clutter" of all the rides being listed and have a source for century-only rides. Yes, there's a lot of info in the Florida Bicycle Touring Calendar, but how far reaching is it? Does it include Century Rides within a day's travel into neighboring states? Probably not. Either leave the blog as is...or my suggestion is to have a place to list Century Rides as part of the drop-down menu item: "Centurion Challenge," naming it "Centurion Challenge & Rides." Might work. Keep it between the ditches. 8^) |

I like the idea of adding "Century Rides" to the nav bar - it would allow rapid access to any/all century rides available within a given radius and timeframe. Good suggestion Paul! |

2008-2009 was the first year of the Century Challenge for the NFBC. I think it was a good addition. However, the purpose of NFBC rides and program is to be an incentive for more peoplel to ride more often. The problem with the Century A Month Club is that it only has one starting time. If you missed November, you have to wait for a year to particpate again. I would like to see the Century A Month award go to anyone who documents finishing one century a month for 12 consecutive months. The award who be presented at the Annual Party in December following the completion of the challenge. For example if a rider started in January 2010 and did a ride each month throughl December 2010, they would have completed the challenge but the award would not be given out until December 2011. This is just one idea on how to expand the challenge. Are there any other ideas? |

Here's part of the problem: When the whole Mileage Award Program was started, the decision was made to begin November 1st and end October 31st--a "cycling fiscal" year as it were so that final tallies could be made and plaques/trophies/mugs/certificates could be ordered and awarded at the Club's annual Christmas shindig. Is it too much to ask to move the annual party into January--like most other bike clubs--and then do a January 1st to December 31st tally? One thing about moving it to January, a lot more venues open up. Just food for thought. |

Paul, Please re-read my proposal carefully. I said that the rider can start the challenge in any month but the award is not given until the December party following completion of 12 consecutive months. More examples: A rider who starts in March 2010 will finish in February 2011 and receive the award at the party in December 2011. A rider who starts in September 2010 (maybe the Watermelon ride) will finish in August 2011 and receive the award at the party in December 2011. On the stats page, we would list riders by the month they started the challenge. November 2010 Century A Month Club (11/1/09 - 10/31/10) To be awarded in December 2010 -Rosemary Clark -Larry Clark -Kevin Pryor -Jonathan Tomessetti -Armond Tomassetti -Richard Horton -Cheryl Adams -Ron Adams -Jeanne Hargrave -Leon Kaszub -Sean Farnum -Jerry Dryden -W. Farrell Mitchell -Kelly Knapp December 2010 Century A Month Club (12/1/09 - 11/30/10) To be awarded in December 2011 - Rider A - Rider B - Rider C - Rider D I think we would have a lot more riders particpating if we change the rules to allow starting in any month. Thanks, JONATHAN T. |

Thanks, JONATHAN T. Jonathan, I get your message. But, part of the fallacy of this is that if I start a Century a month in Dec. '09 and finish in Nov. '10, for example, I certainly do not want to wait until December 2011 to get the award. |

1. If you finsh in December your name would be there on the web site for an entire year showing everyone you had finished the Century Challenge, while those of us who finish in November would only see our names up there for a week before our achievement would disappear. 2. The objective to to help people set goals. I really do not need another coffee mug or t-shirt but I do need goals to keep working toward. - My current goals: Hit 2000 miles for the upcoming NFBC club year, complete the Century Challenge and help my dad achieve both of those goals as well. Finally become the US Tandem Time Trial Champions for the 120 year+ age group in 2010. (We hope there isn't much competition in that age group) |

I don't disagree with your theory at all. In fact, I applaud you for what you say. What motivates you is different than what motivates me. We as individuals have different mindsets; set different goals and seek different rewards albeit public or personal. I agree with you that, after awhile, who needs another coffee mug or t-shirt? Here's the scenario from the club I used to belong to in Indiana: Riding season for club mileage and centuries was January 1st to December 31st. A monthly tally listing the leaders is posted on the Web (electronic newsletter) as well as in print. At the year-end banquet, set mid-to-late January, awards were given and accolades were aplenty, with photos posted on the Web soon after. Here's the catch: They were plaques each recipient could hang on the wall. As I type this, I glance over at two plaques hanging in my home office. They're awards my wife earned both from 1992: 2500 Mile Club and a Century Club Award for having ridden 20 centuries. BTW, she came in 2nd that year. The winner had 21. How's that for a goal (and motivation) to try and achieve 18 years later? Three years ago one of my friends set the all-time record with 120. Here's some motivation from another cycling bud (now deceased) who would ride 100 miles x his age each year. He was already 75. But enough with the nostalgia already. Hey, it's up to the new BOD to decide what to do. Just wondering if there's a silent NFBC majority out there who would be motivated to see (and get) something different. Good luck with the 120 year+ age group. Do they have that as a road race in Coed? 8^) |

| Just checked out the time trials. There is no 120+ age group. The highest one is 110+ and that is being won by pairs of 55 year old riders. Maybe we have no chance to win. |

Check out the Velobrew home page (www.velobrew.com). Kent Lofton (About Bicycles Shop Owner in Orange Park) and Doug Pomeranz won the National Tandem 90+ RR division and came in 3rd in the Elite 90+ TT division. Several years ago Kent teamed with Katy DeGourcey and won the National Coed Division, but the age group escapes me. Your Father and you have to keep Northeast Florida on the National racing map! 8^) |
