Was exploring your area and what a great web site and group of cyclists you have. My two sons and I are going to be traveling down to Florida and staying at Femandina Beach between March 28 and April 3. A couple of questions I was hopig someone could assist us with:

1)Does your club have daily (road) rides during the above dates and can anyone participate? Will a calendar be posted on your website?

2)Not knowing the area could anyone suggest any routes in the Famandina Beach area that are 20-50 miles? Perhaps just a good area to start from would be beneficial. Since we will have driven over 1200 miles we want to spend more time in the saddle than the drivers’ seat.

Any assistance would be appreciated and hope to participate in some of your rides. Just a FYI we are members of the Cherry Capital Cycling Club in Traverse City Michigan http://www.cherrycapitalcyclingclub.org

Ron:

You are more than welcome to join our rides. Most of our rides start somewhere in Jacksonville, so it will be somewhat of a trip for you. For our daily rides, click on the tabs at the left "Rides-Area Rides" Not all are NFBC rides, but many are. Our "Club" rides are our Sunday rides...that Sunday (March 28th), the "Fleming Island/Thunder Road" ride is scheduled. This is about as far away from where you will be as we can get.

We have a club family, the Tomassetti's, who live in Fernandina Beach. Perhaps they will chime in with ride options. If you want a route that loops through Fernandina Beach, click on "Maps" and download the "Pirate Loop". that ride goes through Fernandina Beach and is in the 50 mile range.

Feel free to contact me via e-mail if you have more questions.

Ron, The Pirate's Loop that John mentions is more like 63 miles and may have some road construction on Heckscher Dr. If that's too long, you might consider riding south on A1A towards the ferry. It's very scenic and most of it has paved shoulder. It would be an out-and-back which means you can make it any length you like. You might run into road construction down near the ferry ...in which case you might decide it's time to turn around.

There are several things you can visit along the way ...like Big Talbot Island State Park and Little Talbot Island State Park (which is a much bigger park). Other points of interest are BEAKS, American Beach, Fort George Island Cultural State Park ...and the Mayport Ferry. If you have questions or want a map of a shorter in-town ride, you can email me at BiknJeanne@aol.com.

My response is a little late, but it might help other coming to Fernandina Beach / Amelia Island.

The Pirate Loop is about 63 miles. It does not go through the construction area on Hecksherer Drive. The Zoo Ride which follows a similar route does go through the construction area.

Just north of the ferry on Fort George Island on the west side of Hecksherer is a quiet road (Fort George Road) that leads back to the Kingsley Plantation. The plantation is part of the National Park Service. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingsley_Plantation). On that road is Ribault Inn Club which is a historic site that is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. It is a good place to stop for picnic. The road makes a loop but it is just soil cement with numerous pot holes for a while. Just go slow in this area. This is a very beautiful and relaxing place to ride.

Amelia Island across the Mayport Ferry to Atlantic Beach is about a 50 mile round trip. A1A south of Mayport is congested with traffic. On A1A take Plaza east to avoid the worst traffic.

On Amelia Island we often ride:
-In Fort Clinch State Park (out to the beach, over to the fort, over to the Camp Ground) (There are also MTB trails in Fort Clinch)
-All the way up 14th street the Dee Dee Bartels Boat Ramp (and over to Old Town on the way back) (to the east of 14th street are some hills and the light house)
-From north Fletcher down to south Fletcher, along Amelia Parkway to American Beach.
It is easy to get about 40 miles just going up and down Amelia Island

There is a small passenger ferry that goes between Fernandina downtown and St Mary's Georgia downtown: Kevin McCarthy, the owner and operator of Amelia River Cruises said. "This ferry service re-established an historic transportation link between our two coastal cities and creates many new opportunities for residents and visitors. Notably for cyclists, this service will put in place the over-water linkage of the East Coast Greenway between our two states. It will also allow our local bicycle enthusiasts to take their bikes along for day trips between the cities." (http://ameliarivercruises.com/cumberlandsoundferry.html)

Happy Riding
