I am new to the area and live on Amelia Island. Most of the club rides seem to be centered in Jacksonville. Anyone interested in riding in this area? Or are some of the club rides closer to Amelia Island than I realize? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Rides on Amelia Island (as of Nov 2009)

1. Saturdays at 8:00 people often show up at the Starbucks on Saddler Road on Amelia Island for a ride that goes down to the Mayport Ferry. It is an out and back ride. So some riders turn around at the end of Amelia Island parkway, or at the end of Amelia Island or Talbot State Park entrance. The riders that join this ride are often fast and slower riders often get dropped. Expect the pace to suddenly increase going up the bridge at the south end of Amelia Island. There is a sprint point to the Talbot Island State Park sign. Usually after the sprint they will slow down to regroup.

2. The NFBC Zoo Ride goes through Amelia Island.

3. In April The NFBC Tour De Forts goes through Amelia Island. The fort is Fort Clinch on Amelia Island.

4. The Katie Ride for Life also in April starts and ends on Amelia Island.

5. There is a mountain bike course inside Fort Clinch Park. It is a popular place to ride in the evening and on weekends. A mountain bike race is held every fall on this course.

6. Saturdays: From Harris Teeter supermarket parking lot to the Mayport Ferry is about 18 miles & takes about 1 hour. If you leave Harris Teeter at 7:00 you will get to the Ferry in time for the 8:15 am ferry south to Mayport. From there you can ride to Atlantic Beach and join the Sun Dog Ride that starts at 9:00. Then when the Sun Dog ride gets to Mayport leave the ride and head back north to Amelia Island. Total length is about 75 miles. The south bound ferry leaves at 15 & 45 minutes after the hour. The northbound ferry leaves on the top of hour and 30 minutes after. Bicycles cost $1.

7. There used to be a time trial starting at the south end of Amelia Island. The map for this course is still posted on the NFBC web site map section. The course is 30 km (19 miles).

8. The NFBC Callahan Kings Ferry ride which starts in Callahan is about a 30 minute drive from Amelia Island.

The population of Nassau County is 57,000. Duval County has 850,000. We just do not have a large enough bicycle riding population up here to support a lot of rides.
