Hello fellow bikies!
This was our first ride with you all, and we must say, what a nice group! Beautiful roads and gorgeous weather (who arranged that!!!).
We did miss the first turn in our enthusiasm....thought you guys were calling to alert us of the red car at the stop sign...oops.
Thanks to everyone, "Leigh" sp? and friend parked next to us, (apologize at forgetting names! unless I write them down, well....), Jeanne, Paul, Derrick, and Everyone who made us feel welcome :-)))
In that the club is sponsoring the Traffic Skills course to help in safety, and it appears, to a large extent?? public image...does the club also offer a training course in bike handling in group riding? I read the suggested in the "info" page, supported by the Bicycle League. OK, read this, yes, but how many new riders reading techniques on a page can visualize how to apply in reality to build skills?
I have seen the "mentor program" work wonders in motorcycling and long distance horse riding esp when riding in groups.
So many actions that go un-noticed or considered un-important can create wrecks in all these endeavors. A 1000-lb horse, a 3000-lb car, all with speed invloved...even professional racers going down at very slow speeds, breaking bones.
It is early yet, riders shaking off cobwebs from winter, and spring is apon us!
Ride Well!!

It was nice to finally get to put faces with the names and a pleasure riding with you and your husband. I believe that part of the safety training course covers some bike handling skills and the club does offer transitional rides to transition from c to b,a rides. What skill sets are taught I'm really not sure but the idea of a mentoring program sounds like it has a lot of merit.. I know at one point we had beginners rides down at the rail trail but I believe they were canceled due to lack of participation. Who knows, it may be time to resurrect them if the interest level is there.

See you on the road

When you get ready to do your double century thru our area, let us know. We could join you either on Hwy 40 or 252 and loop around thru Kingsland and back. Our street, Reynolds Rd., connects these two highways. Our average "long" ride is 40-45 miles right now, and we look to increase this as the weeks ride on.
Good training

Paul,
Doyou think folks are "put off" by the beginners phrase? I don't think most people realize there is more to riding, esp in a group, than just getting astride and rolling off. The "oh, I rode bikes all the time when I was a kid!" mentality and all that.
I visited some of the bike shops around here when I moved down a year ago and some of them really tried hard to discourage me from riding with them. I guess 18 years off the bike, I had a lot of work to do. I feel better every day I get out away from the neigborhood to ride and develope handling skills.
Maybe the "program" to help new riders doesn't need to be so structured. A more experienced rider to take a newbie under their wing, may be less intimidating and actually more encouraging/inspiring to the new rider. Riders are going to have different viewpoints, styles, and techniques. Hopefully, the principles are the same, tho.
I know with the long distance horse riding, this approach has saved new riders from injury, horses from being overidden and getting sick. Also, kept riders interested and not to bail out back to the show ring :-)
Ride Well,

Too bad you live far from Jax Beaches because we do the 1 on 1 mentoring bit for anyone who asks at the 7 am Sundog ride. You are welcome to come join us one of these days. The ride is listed under Rides, Area Rides; look under the Saturday rides from Neptune Beach.

Arun,
Thank you for the info :-)
We hope to see ya'll on Sunday, Clyde's ride. We will park at the Okee Adventures and ride to meet at St. George to ride back. One of our favorite training routes is from our house thru some "hilly" (for us! anyway) roads to Okee Adventures but that would add mileage we are not ready for yet. But soon! I Hope!
We will check the schedule and map for Neptune Sat. rides and let you know if we can make any.

Hello Paul,
Weather should be good, too. What time are ya'll looking to ride? And what route are you taking? We could ride with you some on your way to Kingsland or on your trip back thru Folkston? Or if time is good and mileage ok for Chris and me, the loop to Kingsland and back to Folkston for us and home.

FYI: When we last did this ride on October 25, 2009, it appeared that the convenience store at Kings Ferry (17 miles) is permanently closed. Thus the first open store on the route is at 25.5 miles at Hillard at US301.

I rode with a guy from Hilliard this morning that thinks the store is still open. If I recall, he knows the young couple that bought the store some time ago.
